The inevitability of having body image issues that Daniel espouses is sobering, especially since he points to its historical roots, which, in his analysis, predates social media. The chain of body image dissatisfaction (meaning that everyone wants to look like someone else) that he expresses was especially common among gay men, but also emerged in discussions with other men and women in our study. However, while dissatisfaction with self at the site of the body is a long-standing issue, our interviews highlight how social media intensifies and amplifies these feelings.

Jordan and his male friends described how they experienced pressure to post attractive photos of themselves so that women using dating apps like Tinder would find them attractive and want to meet them. Tinder allows users to make a swiping motion on their phones to like or dislike other users; when both users swipe right, they “match,” which means they can chat with each other. As Jordan explained (Figure 3.2):

If you’re a guy, you want to show that you’re muscular and show yourself on the beach or in the gym. . . . The pressure is there because you’re doing it for the swipe. You want someone to swipe right on you so . . . there’s direct competition there.
